The princess with the fairy godmother. Eighth Judicial District Court family Judge Cynthia Giuliani transformed into a fairy godmother to make adoptions dream come true for 21 children on Halloween.

Halloween and court can be a scary for kids, but not in Nevada Eighth Judicial District Family Division Judge Cynthia Giuliani’s court. She will suit-up as a fairy godmother to grant adoption dreams for 14 children on Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. until noon at Family Court, 601 N. Pecos Road, in courtroom 22. What has become an annual Halloween event, is a way to make the experience fun and memorable for families, while raising awareness for the big need for adoptive families in our community. Participating families are invited to wear costumes if they like.

“The costumes take the fright factor out of coming to court for the kids and make it fun. I hope that people who may be able to offer a stable and loving home see this and think about adoption,” said Judge Giuliani. “We hope to touch hearts by showing the joy of these new families.”

The District Court Family Division is involved in other special adoption events, including an annual adoption day marathon which is scheduled this year for Nov. 21 and will include seven Family Division judges. “This is the eighth year that Judge Giuliani’s unique approach has raised awareness for the joy that comes from adoption,” said Family Division Presiding Judge Bryce Duckworth. “There are many children in our community who need a loving and stable home in which to thrive. We hope families that can provide love and stability consider making the adoption wishes of these children come true.”

At any given time, there are around 100 children in Clark County in need of an adoptive family. For more information about adoption, call the Clark County Department of Family Services at 702-455-0800 or e-mail DFSAdoptions@ClarkCountyNV.gov.

It’s the most wonderful day of the year with breakfast, family photos and other treats for 50 families as part of an adoption marathon to be held on Thursday, Nov. 17 , starting at 8 a.m. in the Juvenile Justice Gymnasium, 651 N. Pecos Road. Adorable kids dressed in their finest will then head off to the Family Court, 601 Pecos Road where six judges will finalize their adoptions with hearings from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The event at Family Court is a concerted effort between the Eighth Judicial District Court, the Clark County Department of Family Services, CASA Program, CASA Foundation, The Adoption Exchange, Olive Crest and Nevada Youth Care Providers, and Eagle Quest.  Eagle Quest. The families will be honored before they head to the courtrooms of Judges  Rena Hughes, Cynthia Giuliani, Jennifer Elliott, William Potter, Frank Sullivan and Robert Teuton.

“The adoption marathon is an exceptional event. Seeing families come together to love and support children and witnessing the joy it brings is a bright spot for the Family Division,” said Presiding Judge Charles Hoskin. “There is always a need for caring people to come forward to foster, adopt or speak up as a CASA volunteer for abused and neglected children.”

November is National Adoption Awareness Month, a designation intended to raise awareness on the thousands of children in foster care waiting for permanent loving families through adoption. Adoption month  is also designated as a time to celebrates the families who make the commitment to give children a place to call home. Locally, more than 3,500 children receive services under the supervision of the District Court Family Division.

Each year, National Adoption Day connects thousands of children with permanent families through the help of judges, attorneys, adoption agencies, adoption professionals and child advocates. Every day we get bombarded by negative news. It can be overwhelming and depressing to constantly be reminded of the toll hate takes in this world. The power of love was on display big time at the Family Court adoption marathon. You cannot help but be inspired by the actions and the ultimate sacrifice that adoptive parents make to provide loving and stable homes for kids who just want to be loved. It was inspiring to see parents of a gaggle of happy kids all dressed coordinated and snazzy for the occasion, adopting two more to their diverse lineup of adorable children. It was heartwarming to hear a beaming, beautiful, 12-year-old whose adoption became official say that her face hurt because she was smiling so much. Applause erupted after the adoptions of two young girls; after which one of the girls ask, “Who won?” Without skipping a beat, her new mom replied, “You did.”

There is a big need in our community for adoptive and foster parents. There is also a big need for CASA volunteers and others who help kids with less than favorable circumstances. There were lots of smiles, tears, hugs and plenty of love and joy to go around at Family Court during the adoption marathon. Who won? We all did.
