October 23, 2019 Judge To Make Annual Appearance As Fairy Godmother For Special Halloween Adoption Ceremonies

The princess with the fairy godmother. Eighth Judicial District Court family Judge Cynthia Giuliani transformed into a fairy godmother to make adoptions dream come true for 21 children on Halloween.

Halloween and court can be a scary for kids, but not in Nevada Eighth Judicial District Family Division Judge Cynthia Giuliani’s court. She will suit-up as a fairy godmother to grant adoption dreams for 14 children on Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. until noon at Family Court, 601 N. Pecos Road, in courtroom 22. What has become an annual Halloween event, is a way to make the experience fun and memorable for families, while raising awareness for the big need for adoptive families in our community. Participating families are invited to wear costumes if they like.

“The costumes take the fright factor out of coming to court for the kids and make it fun. I hope that people who may be able to offer a stable and loving home see this and think about adoption,” said Judge Giuliani. “We hope to touch hearts by showing the joy of these new families.”

The District Court Family Division is involved in other special adoption events, including an annual adoption day marathon which is scheduled this year for Nov. 21 and will include seven Family Division judges. “This is the eighth year that Judge Giuliani’s unique approach has raised awareness for the joy that comes from adoption,” said Family Division Presiding Judge Bryce Duckworth. “There are many children in our community who need a loving and stable home in which to thrive. We hope families that can provide love and stability consider making the adoption wishes of these children come true.”

Courts can be a scary place for young kids. Adoptions performed by a fairy godmother judge make it fun and not so scary for the children. They along with their families also get to dress up for the momentous occasion to create a fond memory that families will cherish.

Every child deserves a stable, loving family and for many children adoption is their dream. This is the sixth year Judge Giuliani created the special adoptions experience around Halloween. “There are so many children in our community who need stable, loving homes,” said Judge Giuliani. “These adoptions are a joyous occasion and a bright spot. By celebrating these adoptions in this special way we hope to touch the hearts of those who may be interested in adoption and motivate them to welcome a child into their life.”

The District Court Family Division is involved in other special adoption events, including an annual adoption day marathon which is scheduled this year for Nov.15 and will include seven Family Court judges. “Judge Giuliani is using a creative approach to spotlight a big need in our community for adoptive families,” said Family Division Presiding Judge Bryce Duckworth. “We see far too many children in our community who have endured abuse and neglect. They long for a loving and stable home in which to thrive. Our challenge is to make all their wishes come true.”

April 24, 2018 17 Volunteers including a teacher, chiropractor and hairdresser find fulfillment speaking up for kids who have experienced abuse and neglect

Seventeen new CASA volunteers have opened their hearts to children who have endured abuse and neglect. The volunteers took an oath to speak on behalf of  kids.
Those who want to help abused and neglected children are invited to one of the upcoming CASA orientations, which are held the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Pkwy.

Seventeen new CASA volunteers have opened their hearts to children who have endured abuse and neglect. The volunteers took an oath to speak on behalf of  kids. The volunteers, including a tax specialist, teacher, chiropractor, hairdresser and former foster parent will serve as a voice for the young children whose parents are working through addiction and other issues. Three CASA volunteers were also recognized for their volunteer work to help children.

There is a big need for CASA volunteers in Clark County to speak up for the approximately 3,200 children in the community, who are receiving services under supervision of Family Court. Those who want to help abused and neglected children are invited to one of the upcoming CASA orientations, which are held the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Government Center, 500 S. There are around 350 CASA volunteers serving as a voice for children under the supervision of the Family Court CASA Program. However, many more volunteers are needed to advocate for the remainder of the children in care. Last year, nearly one thousand children had a CASA volunteer to help them navigate through the system, deal with school challenges and handle home life.

The CASA program recruits, screens, trains and supports volunteers to represent the best interests of hundreds of foster children annually. The advocates represent the children in school, family team meetings, and in court. Volunteering for the program involves a two-year commitment and a willingness to spend quality time with the children to advocate for them.

“Creating this experience for these children and their families is a great way to make court a little less intimidating and memorable in a good way,” said Judge Giuliani. “These special adoptions also get people talking and help to raise awareness for the need for adoptive families.”

Nine adoptions were finalized by Judge Giuliani on Oct. 31. “With this special adoption event, Judge Giuliani brings attention to the need for caring families who will adopt, foster or even volunteer as court advocates for abused and neglected children. It is a positive way to bring attention to a huge need,” said Family Division Presiding Judge Charles Hoskin. “These adoptions are heartwarming and we’d like to see a lot more of them.”

January 11, 2017 Local students face-off in mock-trials before Family Court Judges in lead-up to regional competition

Local high school students faced-off in an intense mock trial competition before actual District Court Judges Rebecca Burton, Cynthia Giuliani and Frank Sullivan. The judges volunteered their time and experience to preside over the competition. They gave the young legal eagles some valuable, real-world insight in round-one of mock trial competitions that lead up to a regional challenge.

The District Court Family Division hosted the Fourth Annual Faith Lutheran Mock Trial Competition on Jan. 7.  Six teams totaling almost 50 students participated. The 27 students that earned highest scores will make up the Faith Lutheran Mock Trial teams that will move on to the regional competition on Feb. 11 at the Regional Justice Center.

October 31, 2016 Memory of a lifetime

Twenty-two children got the memory of a lifetime as their adoption dreams were granted today by District Court Family Division Judge Cynthia Giuliani. Eleven families got a special treat when the judge dressed as a fairy godmother for the special adoptions. The kids showed up for their big day dressed in costume and received treats and a teddy bear. The adoption process can be intimidating for young children. Judge Giuliani has performed the special adoptions for five years around Halloween to make the process fun for the kids and to raise awareness of the need for adoptive families.

October 25, 2016 Judge to transform to fairy godmother to make adoptions magical experience

Being adopted and having a forever family is a dream come true for many children in our community who have suffered abuse and neglect. Each year around Halloween, District Court Family Judge Cynthia Giuliani  transforms to a fairy godmother  to makes kids’ adoptions wishes a reality in court. On Monday, Oct. 31 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Family Court, 601 N. Pecos Road, in courtroom 22 the special adoption event will take place. The children are invited to come in costume and are given treats.

This is the fifth year Judge Giuliani will create the special adoptions experience around Halloween. “This is a life-changing experience for these families. Granting adoptions and making them special and memorable is the best part of my job,” said Judge Giuliani. “Seeing the happiness of the children who know they will be loved and cared for is so uplifting and hopefully inspiring for others to consider adoption or foster care.”

April 19, 2016 April is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month and a great time to consider volunteering as a CASA Volunteer

 

Children who are in foster care face daunting challenges. They are generally traumatized by abuse and neglect and have to face their day-to-day lives with constant uncertainty. A Light of Hope Ceremony was held at the Eighth Judicial District Family Court to illuminate the need for volunteers to advocate for the nearly 3,300 abused and neglected children who are receiving services under the supervision of Family Court.

“I would like to call on college students, retirees, those who want to make a difference and have a little time to spare to attend one of the CASA information session and learn how they can really have a positive impact on a young life,” said Family Court Judge Frank Sullivan, who oversees the CASA program. “By volunteering a just a few hours a week to serve as a CASA, volunteers can really make a positive impact on the life of a child.”

The CASA program recruits, screens, trains and supports volunteers to represent the best interests of hundreds of foster children annually. The advocates represent the children in school, child and family team meetings, and in court. Volunteering for the program involves a two-year commitment and a willingness to spend quality time with the children to advocate for them. In 1980, Judge John Mendoza led the creation of the Clark County CASA Program. The CASA mission continues to be fully supported by Family Court judges.

“Each time we swear in new CASA volunteers, we are grateful that they are willing to speak up for abused and neglected children. We are also reminded of how many more volunteers are needed to provide a voice for every child in foster care,” said Presiding Family Court Judge Charles Hoskin.

Adoption is a dream come true for many children in our community who just want a stable and loving home. District Court Family Judge Cynthia Giuliani dressed as a fairy godmother today to make adoptions for eight families a magical experience  The children came in costumes or their best clothes and enjoyed teddy bears and special treats for the experience of a lifetime.

This is the fourth year Judge Giuliani brought her fairy godmother magic for adoptions around Halloween. “We have received so much positive feedback on these special adoptions,” said Judge Giuliani. “It is a real highlight every year to make this very special occasion even more magical for families who may otherwise be intimidated by the idea of coming to court.”
